Scholars argue that this is a defense mechanism that mutating books often adopt. After all, if you aren't willing to chase down and whack the book a few times, you are unlikely to take diligent care of it in the first place, now are you?
As several idle theories, this is complete bullocks but it does force librarians of magical books to be more speedy than you would expect.
